Once
follows
busker Glen Hansard (of The
Commitments
fame and lead singer of Irish band The Frames) and the young Czech
woman (Marketa Irglova) he meets on the streets of Dublin. After
hearing his songs she compels, and helps, him to record them. The
attraction between them is obvious, but their relationship remains
platonic. He is pining over a girlfriend who left him to relocate to
London and she left behind a husband in the Czech Republic when she
came to Dublin in search of a better life for both herself and her
infant daughter. As close as they become during their time together,
nowhere do they connect more fully and meaningfully than through the
music they both adore. This musical of sorts (most of the film is
expressed through their songs) is also a soulful valentine to
friendship and the joys of hard graft! Definitely one for music
lovers.
Brad
Bird may be one of the few filmmakers working in animation today who
understands what the concept of a "family film" means. It's something
that offers material to viewers of all ages and doesn't lose one group
by catering too strongly to another. Following The Iron Giant and The
Incredibles, Bird has turned his attention to the sewers and kitchens
of Paris. Remy is a culinary wizard of a rat. His senses are so refined
that he refuses to eat garbage and is used by others as a "poison
detector" since he can tell if something is toxic by sniffing it. His
desire, however, is to become a chef, and he gets a chance to achieve
his dreams when he meets Linguini, who works in a famous Paris
restaurant, who, with direction from Remy under his chef’s hat, starts
to create dishes of amazing mastery and becomes the talk of the city.
This Cyrano de Bergerac style film is also a heart warming look at the
role of the outsider.
